About Us

Founded in 1948, Old Shell Animal Hospital is the oldest veterinary hospital in Mobile, Alabama. While we’ve kept up with the changes in technology since then, we haven’t lost the that warm, cozy charm of those early days, according to our clients. We invite you and your furry friends to come by and experience firsthand our animal hospital’s comfortable facility and friendly staff!

At Old Shell Animal Hospital, we specialize in the treatment and prevention of illness and disease that affect cats and dogs. In doing so, our staff provides the highest standard of quality veterinary medical care and compassion for you and your pets. That is evident in the friendly and supportive atmosphere that we have worked diligently to create, where pets are treated with kindness and pet owners receive both information and support. We are dedicated to making your veterinary experience thorough for your peace of mind and as pleasant as possible.

Dr. Mary Katherine Cross

Dr. Cross, a native of Montgomery, Alabama, graduated from the Montgomery Academy in 2000. In 2003, Dr. Cross received her Bachelor’s of Animal Science, cum laude, from Auburn University, and in 2007 she graduated from the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, cum laude, completing an eight-year degree in only seven years.

While Dr. Cross has been fortunate to have worked for and with many of Mobile's veterinarians, it wasn't until she joined the team at Old Shell Small Animal Hospital in 2011 that she found her home. In December 2012, she purchased the hospital from her friend and mentor Dr. Les Greer.

Dr. Cross and her husband, Jonathan, have two daughters, Cadence and Palmer, joining an animal family consisting of two cats, “Roscoe” and “Snip,” and a dog, “Ruxin.” Dr. Cross is an active member of the Mobile Junior League, the Mobile Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club of Mobile and a former Vice President of the Mobile Veterinary Medical Association.

She received the Nappie Award for “Best Veterinarian” in 2014 and 2017. She also was a finalist, or one of the top 5 Veterinarians in Mobile, in 2015 and 2016. Dr. Cross has also served as a consultant for Zoetis, the animal branch of Pfizer. When not working, she and her husband enjoy exploring their adopted city, hiking, traveling and photography.
